Taking a break from promoting his latest film, “Hail, Caesar!,” in Germany, George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, paid a visit to Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday.  The actor-activist and the human-rights attorney sat down for a private meeting with Merkel to discuss the crisis in Syria and Europe’s efforts to help the Middle Eastern nation’s refugees, the Associated Press reported. They talked about “the responsibilities of all states, not just European states but states around the world, to deal with what is a global problem, not just a Syrian problem or a German issue,” said former British foreign secretary David Miliband, who now helms the International Rescue Committee aid group and joined the couple for the 40-minute sit-down.

Rande Gerber: I show up at motels unannounced with George Clooney and we often share a room
Cindy Crawford’s husband and multi-millionaire entrepreneur Rande Gerber tells Bryony Gordon about making tequila with George Clooney
Rande Gerber, husband of Cindy Crawford and business partner of George Clooney, has apparently been drinking all afternoon. Tequila, to be precise. “It’s normal,” explains his PR. “You’ll have to drink some too.”

We are in the glamorous confines of the Berkeley hotel in Knightsbridge, and it has only just gone 4pm. Would it be rude to request a coffee, a tea, or some water, perhaps, instead? And will Rande – no sniggering at the back – be rolling around on the floor in a state of inebriation by the time our interview starts? I do hope so.

What’s it like to be the “arm candy” in the relationship?

That’s the question Stephen Colbert had for George Clooney during his premiere “Late Show” episode on Tuesday.
Colbert brought up Clooney’s marriage to human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, asking “What is it like to be the arm candy in a relationship, because she’s the very serious person?” The host added, “She must say like, ‘We’re going to meet extremely intelligent people tonight – these are not show folk. Just be shiny and pretty.”

“That’s mostly what I do,” Clooney responded.

Colbert also congratulated the actor on his upcoming 1-year wedding anniversary on Sept. 27.
Clooney’s response? “They said it wouldn’t last.”

CBS’ new late-night host even had a little gift for the power couple: a paperweight from Tiffany’s with the engraving, “I don’t know you.”
The interview didn’t solely focus on Clooney’s love life, though. The pair also did a funny bit about a fake movie called “Decision Strike.” © 2015 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.
